A winner has emerged from the four different movie studios that battled it out for rights to Atari's classic game of 'Asteroids'. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Universal Studios is now the rights holder and that they have appointed Matthew Lopez as the script writer, all while Lorenzo di Boneventura will be producing the film. The game was released in 1979 and featured a triangular space ship that had to clear asteroid fields and avoid being hit. This game in contrast to the games of today has no story line what so ever, so I'm interested to see how they will manage to pull out a whole movie out of this. Then again it's Hollywood where anything is possible, both good and bad. As of right now Universal Studios is already working on some of Hasbro's board games, 'Candyland', 'Monopoly' and 'Battleship'. So with this in mind 'Asteroids' won't be that difficult for Universal right?
Play an unofficial version of the game below and like always enjoy!
