Last night I attended the premiere of Orphan. With this said I must warn you that spoilers will follow so read on at your own discretion. I went in not expecting a lot from this film but, I was sure proven wrong. I was skeptic thinking "what can a little girl do that's so bad?" and that's where the unexpected twist comes into the picture. The movie does an overall good job at building up suspense and creating liked and memorable characters.
The movie starts off by showing the audience the reason why both Kate and John (parents) seek to adopt a child but, the movie doesn't take a break, it just continues to build up. Later through the movie the audience gets a more detailed explanation as to why the mother (Kate) lost their child in the beginning and why their young daughter can't speak and is almost completely deaf. By doing this the audience learned more about each character and in return people became attached to the characters.
As the movie progresses the audience learns more about the complicated person that Esther is. Esther being the orphan that Kate and John adopt from a local orphanage is brought into the house and that's when strange things start to happen. The film does very well at creating suspense (like I mentioned before) for every scene where Esther shows her true colors.
The climax of the movie is near the end which also reveals the big unexpected twist. We find out that Esther is not a 9-year-old girl but, a 30-year-old woman who has a rare dwarfism disease that gives her the young appearance. We also learn that she escaped from an insane institute. This twist is what makes the whole movie a bit more believable in my opinion.
This movie is not a horror film so anyone looking for that will be disappointed but, if suspense is your thing you will be in for a good treat.

Orphan opens this Friday July 24, 2009.
